What is IVF?
IVF does stand for in vitro fertilization which has given many couples their happiness in the form of their broods. Now, this technology helps with fertilization, embryo development, implantation so that a woman can get pregnant. It is known to be one of the famous types of assisted reproductive technology (ART). In vitro fertilization has made by combining surgical procedures that help in the fertility of an egg. Further implant that egg in the uterus.
Now, IVF does involve many of the stages to move with. Like first you need to take the medicines that doctors suggest which help to enhance egg maturity and ready for fertilization. Furthermore, doctors work to take the eggs out of your body and mix it with sperm. Which in turn to makes the sperm fertilize the eggs. Moving on to the next step, they put 1 or more eggs right in the uterus. If the embryos get to implant into the lining of your uterus then you are going to conceive. It has been seen that some of the couples need the treatment one more time but happens the least.
Besides, there are many of the steps in the process of IVF. If you want the details then keep following till the end.
Step by step IVF procedure:
Preparation for IVF treatment:
After getting to know IVF meaning, we are here with the detailed section of the IVF procedure. Before you go for the IVF, you will need to take an evaluation of your uterus along with fallopian tubes. This process is needed to ensure that there aren’t any issues regarding the surgical repair. However, the pre-cycle testing round includes hormonal evaluation as well. This step is taken to assess thyroid function and ovarian reserve which demands screening of both the partners to check on sexually transmitted infection. Not only this but it also includes analysis of semen of the male partner.
Many of the women continue the fertility drug from 10-11 days while others require 8-14 days for ovarian stimulation. Hence, ovarian stimulation is used to make multiple eggs matured for egg retrieval. Commonly 10-20 eggs are retrieved for IVF. Then the doctor carries on, to take your ultrasound reports to check you have a sufficient amount of follicles. Not only this but they also run a check on your estrogen level, if all goes well you are treated with a shot of hCG along with some medication. After that, you are ready to get a cycle of IVF. So, with that doctor jump you with step 1.
Step 1- Egg Retrieval:
Before it’s the time for eggs to ovulate, you will be undergoing a surgical process that removes eggs from the follicles in your ovaries. The follicles are entered using a needle. After that follicular fluid contents are removed by using gentle suction which takes an egg along with fluid. However, this whole process is going to take less than 30 minutes. While in between, you might face some cramps which might go until the next day.
Step 2- Fertilization:
The next step of IVF involves the eggs examined in labs. Where experts work to record the maturity and quality of the eggs. The matured eggs are carried into a special culture medium that is placed in an incubator. From there, the eggs are fertilized with sperm after several hours. Then the experts check the fertilization progress the other day.
Step 3- Embryo transfer:
After the fertilization progress has been checked, the coupe moves forward to decide the transfer da of an embryo. This time should fall between 1-6 days or maybe 3-5 days after an egg has been retrieved. Once the doctors get to see the results of the test of genetics then the selected embryo is further chosen and placed into the uterus.
This is one under 1 or 2 months after egg retrieval. Using a soft and flexible catheter, they transfer the embryo into the uterus. After that, the embryo continues to develop in the uterus which in result hatches embryo following lining of uterine. This is done under a time period of 1 or 2 days.
Step 4- Assisted Hatching:
Usually, some additional processes are required for the older women or for those couples who have faced failures in the previous IVF cycle or frozen embryos. However, assisted hatching is a procedure which is micromanipulation. In this process, a hole is made around the flexible shell which tends to surrounds the cell of a premature embryo. Usually, it is seen that this membrane dissolves by itself that is a necessary point for embryo implant.
Although, these additional processes have not been described precisely that it improves live birth rates. Besides this is going to involve minimal risk. At present, there is no proof that it enhances pregnancy or live birth rates for different kinds of IVF patients. Assisted hatching is performed prior to embryo transfer.
Step 5- Pregnancy Test:
After 12 days of embryo transfer, a woman has to go through a blood pregnancy test. In case if the test confirms the pregnancy, then the woman has to test blood and ultrasounds to get confirmation about viability. This test proves that there are multiple pregnancies, in case. By the time, the pregnancy seems to be working normally after 9-10 weeks then you will be sent to your obstetrician.
What are the chances of getting pregnant with IVF?
The success rates of IVF are reported are generally according to women’s age. As it is seen that if a woman gets older the success IVF rates go down, in case if she is using her own eggs. According to the study of a study at New York University, they have provided data on the success rate of IVF. The data says the IVF success rates in women under 35 are 40%. Although, the women aged more than 42 have an IVF success rate at 4%.
Generally for all the women, there is the least chance of IVF failure is 29.5%. Almost all the women see success rates 20-30% for each cycle. However, with every round of IVF chances of conceiving get decreased and charges for the cycle get increased. Hence the best age for the IVF is said to be after 35 years or 42 to 25 years in a woman. If you are using donor eggs then the best age for you is after 45 years.
